Philips GamePix 900 4K@60 HD@240 Gaming Projector Review

Performance

This is a gaming projector, so that’s exactly what we’re focusing on today! I fired up Rocket League and it dropped to Full HD with a 120Hz, although with a supported system such as a PC, it will push up to 240Hz in this mode too, which is incredible for CS:GO and similar high refresh rate shooters.

Admittedly, at 100″ Full HD does leave room for improvement; the edges of the cars and other lines were a bit rough, but that’s more just size of the screen and resolution rather than a downside of the projection. However, the smoothness of the image and the low latency cannot be ignored, and it’s extremely responsive for gaming.

However, putting it in the 4K60 mode was, well, even better in my opinion. The response time and latency felt incredible, the image is pin sharp, and weirdly… brighter! So yeah, there are tradeoffs for the higher refresh rate mode, but for a sub £1000 projector to even offer such high speeds is pretty exceptional.

But overall, I played quite a lot of Rocket League and honestly found the 4K60 mode to be preferable for the big screen. It’ll differ from game to game, user to user, on what feels best, but again, you have that choice just a few button presses away.

Big screen gaming just takes on a different vibe, such as a 100″ game of golf, it just feels so relaxing and immersive to see the course taking up most of the wall in your house.

OK, I’m still pretty crap at golf on the PS5, but at the same time, it was more enjoyable on the big screen, the colours look vibrant, the image is bright and the contrast really pops, so a big thumbs up to the GamePix 900 here.

When it comes to gaming, Ruth and I love to play games together on an evening; we’re currently doing couch co-op of the entire Borderlands franchise, and having a much bigger screen for splitscreen is a huge advantage. Doing this on our 49″ LCD isn’t even a closer comparison.

However, later that evening, we found an even better option using the PS5, Xbox Series X, this projector, the TV and Crossplay… and well, this was a few weeks ago, and we’ve been gaming like this every night since… yeah, it’s pretty freaking sweet.

Ever tried taking a photo of your gaming? Yeah, it’s not easy, resulting in an 88th place loss in Fortnite, but hey, the game does look pretty slick on the big screen. Again, I’m sticking with 4K60 here, it just looks so good! However, this one does play really nicely at 120Hz, but I just like the higher resolution.

The colours, the contrast, the smoothness of motion, all get a huge thumbs up from me, and while I love the power of my BenQ projector, its tech is around five years old now. The GamePix is noticeable improvement, running cooler and quieter, using less power, offers competitive brightness, but most importantly, the response times and refresh rate are actually competitive and usable for gaming, and while my projector will take it to school for movie night, I really-really want to trade mine out for something more gaming focused now, as the response times of GamePix are about 1/10th that of my BenQ… yikes.

From CS:Go to Cyberpunk, the GamePix is the best gaming experience I’ve had from any projector, largely due to the lower input latency and response times compared to other projectors I’ve used, and also that it is both bright and supports 4K too, it’s just a joy to use.

That being said, it’s still got a bright image, good colours, and punchy built-in speakers too, so sitting down to watch some Top Gear was honestly a great experience.

While it lacks any native apps, just the USB in and HDMI in, when paired with a Chrome dongle, console, PC or similar, it’s everything you really need. Projectors are often bogged down with feature rich software and apps, and all they do is slow the thing down and add latency. The GamePix is just a projector, nothing more, nothing less, and it’s all the better for it.
