MSI RadiX AX6600 WiFi 6 Gaming Router

However, if you are building yourself a flagship gaming PC you're going to want to get the best performance possible from it, right? Sure, a new monitor, peripherals, and a nice gaming chair can bring their own rewards and benefits, but have you put much thought into your router? Internet speeds are certainly getting faster, and while I know I'm fortunate to get the speeds I do at home (1Gbps+) even on more modest broadband speeds, people are rarely tapping the full potential of their connection between the outside world and their computer. Even more so, many people's home network is often left wanting, with poor WiFi and network transfer speeds being primary issues for most. Of course, MSI is right on track to solve much of this and more, as they're releasing their first-ever networking products, and they're starting with some really high-end hardware! They recently revealed three new MSI RadiX Series Gaming Routers at CES 2023 and during their MSI virtual launch event. The RadiX AXE6600, the RadiX BE22000, and the RadiX AX6600, which is the one I'm lucky enough to have in my office right now. Next-Gen Networking With RadiX MSI held their virtual event to launch these products, and well, I suppose online is a great place to launch a router series! MSI have long held onto high standards for PC gaming though, as they saying the same sort of things for their new networking gear. Hardware for gamers, built by gamers. So, the MSI RadiX AX6600 WiFi 6 Tri-Band Gaming Router is here. It promises to tap the potential of the latest WiFi 6 technologies, and given that many of the more recent motherboards and mobile phones now support these technologies too, it's a perfect time to upgrade your router. Seriously asking, but how many of you know which generation of WiFi technologies your router supports? If it's a few years old now, you're likely lagging behind in terms of speed and quality! Going from Wifi 4 at 600 Mbps, to WiFi 5 at 6.9 Gbps, to a whopping 9.6 Gbps on WiFi 6. Of course, this is just the start for MSI, and they have teased a new Mesh Router as well as a USB WiFi Adapter that we can look forward to in the near future. However, for now, let's dive in for an even closer look at the RadiX AX6600. RadiX AXE6600 & AX6000 Specifications Both the AX6600 and AXE6600 are built on the same foundations, with a powerful quad-core 1.8 GHz processor, and both feature 6 powerful antennas (the E has RGB on the antennas too). They'll both support up to 60 devices, great for those with lots of gaming devices and smart home equipment! They're both well equipped with their latest AI QoS technology, the same high-end graphene heatsink, and the same array of USB and RJ45 connectivity. However, the AXE supports 6GHz technologies too, but without a doubt, these are both extremely well-equipped and high-performance gaming routers. Setup MSI has designed this to be versatile, powerful and practical, but also pretty easy to setup too. It comes with a power adaptor that supports UK/US plugs, and a single Ethernet patch cable, and that's it really. You just plug it in and get on with your setup. Connectivity is good too, with a USB 3.0 port on the back, which can be used for storage devices, printers and more. There's a 2.5Gbps WAN/LAN port, and 4 x 1Gbps ports. On the underside, there's plenty of ventilation and further ventilation around the sides, ensuring the device stays cool. It's passively cooled too, so it's nice and quiet. There are some rubber feet, but as you can see, it can be wall mounted too. The controllers are simple enough, with an LED off button, WiFibutton, and WPS button, everything else is just indicator LEDs, all pretty easy really. A lovely 3D MSI logo on the front though, I like that. There are six antennae on the MSI RadiX AX6600 WiFi 6 Gaming Router, and with support for 2.4G and dual 5G, keeping large amounts of wireless devices connected with a strong signal and good speeds shouldn't be an issue. Plus, I think it looks pretty fantastic and being able to move the antenna means you can really fine tune it to suit your needs and space. The setup is one of the easiest I've ever had, or at least the fastest. The UI is really nicely designed, with enough easy-to-understand details for networking noobs but enough technical stuff in there for the enthusiasts too. There's an AI Auto mode, which is great, as it'll prioritise network traffic on the fly. However, you can lock it into gaming mode, streaming mode, or even Work From Home mode to suit your needs. It's very easy to monitor the overall performance. There's a Game Turbo Booster feature too, cutting networking latency down even further for both wired and wireless connectivity. I've had trouble setting up port forwarding, VPN and more on many routers, but this is by far one of the easiest I've seen. Everything is clearly explained and easily found in the settings, which is great. If you do want to dive into more advanced modes, there are extensive options for firewalls, parental control, QoS, IPv6 and much more, as you would expect from such a high-end router. However, for most people, just having the AI modes enabled will ensure you get the best performance for most tasks. Even the USB port is easily customised, being able to run file servers, downloads and more on the port turning your router into a more versatile hub for your network. My internet is having a slow day today, which is a shame as I was hoping to flex the full 1.21 gigawatts or 1200Mbps, I get those mixed up. Alas, this router is absolutely no slouch over WiFi. The same again on my Samsung S22 Ultra from the furthest corner of my house and upstairs, just absolutely killer signal strength. How Much Does it Cost? There are three models in the new MSI router range, the RadiX AX6600 which I showed you today, the slightly more gamer-looking AXE6600, and then the RadiX BE22000. However, keep in mind, the AX6600 is already what I would call a next-gen flagship router, as few people have the technologies in their home or office to utilise WiFi 6E, and even fewer WiFi 7, which is bleeding edge tech that I'd say is overkill for just about anyone. The RadiX AXE6600 is expected to be £319, while the AX6600 is just £279. However, there's also their AX1800 WiFi USB adaptor which is £49. We'll provide retail links ASAP, they just weren't live at the time of writing. Overview Which one of these is right for you? Well, that's easy, it's the RadiX AX6600 it's all the router and more than 99.9% of people will ever need for their SMB, home office, or home. I run 5 PCs in this house, several consoles, and a plethora of phones, laptops, tablets, smart home gear, and a NAS, giving me roughly 60 network devices in total and the AX6600 is more than capable of keeping everything going full throttle, not that everything does go full throttle all at the same time anyway. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting the best performance from their gaming PC, consoles and more when it comes to cutting online latency. As for the RadiX AXE6600, few devices support WiFi 6E right now, but some of the flagship motherboards of the last few months do, but unless you have other network devices and/or an internet connection speed way North of 1Gbps you're unlikely to see any benefit. However, it also has RGB lighting on it, so for some, that alone is worth the extra investment, because it looks pretty swag. The RadiX BE22000 is basically for those living in the future, super high-end but again, diminishing returns unless you have compatible devices. However, I could see the appeal of future-proofing for the next 5 years+. MSI Routers This may be the first time MSI got into the networking market, but it looks like they're playing a strong game. The AX6600 is one of the best routers I've ever used, and it's by far the easiest and smoothest setup process I've ever had too. If you're looking to get the best from your home network, it's certainly ticking all the right boxes. However, if this is where MSI is starting, I can't wait to see them push even further with more routers in the future.
