Philips GamePix 800 Smart GMX800 Projector Review
A Closer Look

The GamePix 800 is a great-looking unit, with its black and a hint of red having that modern retro PC vibe; basically, how gaming hardware looked before RGB was a thing. It features a bit of a lens cover, which should help prevent unwanted light banding from hitting your ceiling or floor and focus it more on your projection surface or screen, as well as some ventilation along the front and sides to keep it cool.

This project uses an LED light source, which offers fantastic advancements that replace the more traditional bulb projector technology. The biggest benefit is often touted as the bulb life, as it’s good for around 30000 hours, or about 20 years of regular usage. However, from my experience, it’s the efficiency; they use less power, generate significantly less heat, and as a result, run a lot quieter too.

There is a manual control for focus and zoom, as well as digital controls for keystone, making it easy to set up and adapt to various configurations without too much trouble.

There’s an adjustable screw foot on the bottom too, so you and adjust the projection angle. However, there’s also screw mounts to install it on a ceiling bracket, wall mount or tripod.

While there’s a pair of HDMI ports, allowing you to hook up consoles, media players and other devices, the system has Google TV built in too. The smart features are a big benefit, and while this is a “gaming” projector thanks to its 120Hz 8ms output, having all your favourite streaming apps, and media players such as Plex, JellyFin, and more available to you is a big benefit for media lovers.

On top, there’s a bunch of built-in controls. They’re not needed, as there is a remote included, but if you’re sitting next to the projector and the remote has slipped down the back of the couch, they’ll certainly come in handy.
