Philips GamePix 800 Smart GMX800 Projector Review
How Much Does it Cost?
The Philips GamePix 800 (GMX800/INT) is available now with an MSRP of £999, and is currently available on the Philips EUR site for 1099 EUR. It’s a new product and should be landing any time now, and Philips tell me it should see a wider launch here in July. While you can get cheaper projectors, keep in mind that the refresh rate, the brightness, and the response time are all high-end gaming-focused features, and that’s what you’re paying for. If you just want a movie projector that’s Full HD with a 60Hz refresh rate and you don’t care about latency, you can get something of good quality for around £600, such as the Philips ProPix 850.
Overview
The GamePix 800 delivers a surprisingly detailed and vibrant Full HD (1920×1080) image, especially on a 100″ screen. Thanks to its DLP technology, quality optics, 1500:1 contrast ratio, and 98% Rec.709 colour gamut, the visuals are sharp and can rival some hybrid 4K pixel shift projectors. The projector supports HDR10 and HLG formats, providing a great HDR experience for movies, gaming, and YouTube. It effectively enhances detail in high dynamic range content and can accept a 4K media source without issue.
Brightness
With up to 2500 lumens from its LED light source, the GamePix 800 is impressively bright, even for daytime viewing in moderately lit environments. This allows for a vibrant image, particularly at a screen size around 100 inches.
Build Quality
The projector sports a “modern retro PC vibe” with its black and red design. It feels durable, with good ventilation and a lens cover. The LED light source is a significant plus, offering a long lifespan (30,000 hours), lower power consumption, less heat, and quieter operation compared to traditional bulb projectors. It also includes manual focus/zoom, digital keystone, an adjustable foot, and tripod mounting options, and can be ceiling mounted with any universal bracket.
Features
Key features include Google TV integration for smart streaming capabilities (Plex, JellyFin, etc.), two HDMI ports, manual and digital image adjustments, and on-unit controls in addition to the remote. Google TV means you get things like YouTube, Prime, Netflix apps pre-installed, but of course, with the Play Store, you can load up plenty more bits of software too. It’s also got voice search on the remote, supports Google Home, and can be controlled from other Google devices, such as your phone.
Movies
For movie enthusiasts, the GamePix 800 offers a superb experience with its Full HD resolution, excellent colour reproduction, strong contrast, and HDR support. The ability to project up to a 150″ image creates an immersive cinematic feel, and the built-in Google TV provides easy access to streaming services.
Gaming
This is where the GamePix 800 truly shines. The 120Hz refresh rate at 1080p combined with an exceptionally low 8ms input lag delivers a silky smooth and highly responsive gaming experience, ideal for fast-paced and competitive games on consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Dedicated gaming modes are available, though custom calibration is recommended for the best results; that being said, the out of the box settings were rather excellent anyway.
Should I Buy One?
If you’re a gamer looking for a projector that prioritises high refresh rates and low input lag for a competitive edge on a big screen, the GamePix 800 is a strong contender, especially at its £999 price point. It also doubles as an excellent home entertainment projector for movies and streaming, thanks to its superb image quality and the ease of use provided by Google TV. While not the cheapest Full HD projector, its gaming-specific features justify the cost for those who will utilise them. If gaming isn’t a priority, and you’re content with 60Hz and higher latency, more affordable options do exist.
