Philips GamePix 800 Smart GMX800 Projector Review

Philips are a well-established name when it comes to display technology, both for consumers and in the world of business. Philips brings its expertise to the projection market with the GamePix 800 projector, and while I was very impressed by the GamePix 900 last month (review here), this more affordable model still packs some serious specifications. Specifically designed with gamers and home entertainment enthusiasts in mind, aiming to deliver a large-screen, immersive experience. The GamePix 800 utilises DLP technology, promising sharp image quality, deep contrast, and vibrant colours. Its LED light source offers a long lifespan of up to 30,000 hours, far beyond the 8000 hours my bulb projector is rated for, translating to potentially 20 years of use at an average of 4 hours per day, while also being more energy-efficient compared to traditional lamp projectors.

Philips GamePix 800

The GamePix 800 boasts several key features that enhance both cinematic and gaming experiences. It projects a Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) with a brightness of up to 2500 lumens, allowing for comfortable viewing even in moderately lit environments. The 1500:1 contrast ratio and 98% Rec.709 colour gamut contribute to rich and accurate visuals, further enhanced by an onboard Colour Management System and HDR10 support for greater detail in high dynamic range content. The projector can cast an image size of up to 150 inches, creating a truly immersive big-screen feel. It also integrates Google TV, providing a smart platform for accessing various streaming services and personalised content recommendations.

For gaming, the Philips GamePix 800 should deliver, thanks to its 120Hz refresh rate at 1080p and a low input lag of just 8ms. These specifications are crucial for fast-paced games, making it an ideal pairing for something like the PS5, Xbox Series X or the Switch 2, ensuring silky smooth gameplay. Manual focus and keystone correction allow for flexible setup options, and the inclusion of two HDMI ports facilitates easy connectivity to multiple gaming consoles and other devices.
